Adware and Malware
Sometimes, you get more than you bargained for when you download a new program online. If you're not careful, the program could come with some "extras" attached. These add-ons can hijack your home page, install browser toolbars and create other annoyances. I like to call these pesky add-ons "annoyware." Usually, annoyware is selected by default when you install the program. You'll zip through the programs' install screens and won't notice it. Some annoyware is harmless and easy to uninstall. However, some versions can invade your privacy and steal your information. Either way, they can slow down your computer and cause errors. The most annoying types bury themselves deep into your computer. A regular uninstall won't get rid of them completely. You need to work up some elbow grease and give your PC a deep cleaning. One program alone will not always remove your infection. For that reason is why we actually use 3-level scanners to remove all traces of infections.
